Folliculitis, a condition in which there is an inflammation of the hair follicles, causes permanent hair loss in some individuals. Folliculitis can occur on any part of the body and it can lead to hair loss when it happens on the scalp. This condition should get treated immediately as it can lead to massive hair loss. A condition like this calls for hair loss treatment. The treatment will majorly comprise of hair transplant. The condition causes superficial hair loss which quickly grows back.
Identification of Folliculitis
The first appearance of folliculitis is characterized by the appearance of small red bumps on your scalp. The scalp will be filled with small, red, raised bumps if the person is suffering from this condition. These bumps are usually itchy and often concentrate along the hairline. They often start by looking like a red ring surrounding the base of every hair follicle. Hair loss is evident as the folliculitis progresses.
The patient should never scratch the bumps as they will cause soreness on the scalp and could lead to the formation of a crust that covers hair in patches
If the scalp folliculitis develops in the base of your scalp, then it could lead to folliculitis keloidalis. Folliculitis keloidalis is a condition that has a combination of cicatricial alopecia and folliculitis. If left untreated, it can cause the formation of hairless keloids on the scalp, which can lead to permanent hair loss.
In rare cases, it can lead to a condition called acne necrotic. This condition manifests in the form of large bumps and nodules which cause scarring on the scalp. Acne necrotic is common in black men, but it can affect all races and genders.
Causes of Folliculitis
The cause of folliculitis comprise of bacteria , yeast and mites. The bacteria staphylococcus aureus is known to cause inflammation in such cases. Folliculitis may also be caused by the build-up of oils on the scalp. You are at a greater risk of developing folliculitis if you have an immunodeficiency disease, you shave your scalp, or you use certain antibiotics or topical steroids for medication, etc.
Folliculitis and Permanent Hair Loss
Mild folliculitis doesn’t cause permanent hair loss, but if you wait long before you avail treatment, there will be increased inflammation and scarring of hair follicles leading to hair loss. You must avail of the treatment as soon as possible to avoid permanent hair loss.
